Welcome to www.thelightsfantastic.com

The 1960s and the 1970s were two decades of immense innovation, within home and kinetic lighting, seeing the introduction of the world's first lava lamp in 1963, known originally as the Astro Lamp in the UK and brought to the USA in 1965 as Lava Lite.

We also saw the introduction of beautiful fiber optic lamp designs with companies such as Fantasia and Poly-Optics and the endless manufacturers of disco lighting and color organs. However a company which is often forgotten is The Lights Fantastic. This site is also dedicated to color organs, disco lighting and other funky lighting from the period, the fantastic lights of the period. Use the menu above to navigate.

The Lights Fantastic was responsible for manufacturing beautiful original hand made sculptures that were illuminated via a small bulb in the base. These wonderful lights, are often seen in vintage catalogs next to other iconic lamps of their time such as Lava Lites and Starflites.

The Lights Fantastic products were distinctive by design, graceful unique sculptures that glowed when the lamp was switched on. Capturing the effect of fireworks, these lamps were stunning. Further to this, each one was hand made thus being different, this renders each lamp unique, which adds an exciting twist to the product. Catalog information indicates that they shipped with colour changing discs to change the lighting mood, a 6 foot cord with an on/off switch and some models featured an elm burl base with a black metal pedestal. These wonderful creations were U.L. approved and a great example of the innovations in lighting in the 1970s. Please enjoy the photos below of The Lights Fantastic and other fantastic lamps from the 1960s and 1970s.
