2013 saw fifty years of the iconic lava lamp invented in 1963. The lava lamp has had a long journey through the decades seeing the popularity of the 1960s and the 1970s, the revival in the 90s, the continuous interest in the 2000s.
Whilst the colour combinations and the base finishes have changed so diversely over the decades, the iconic form of the Astro lamp has retained its beautiful timeless shape. To celebrate 50 years of the lava lamp, Mathmos introduced a Heritage line of Astro lamps and a special multiple column Monster lava lamp which was displayed at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Mathmos also introduced a special limited edition Astro lamp designed to commemorate 50 years of the Astro lamp featuring a Clear/ Red colour way, a gold anodised base and a commemorative band place on the base.
Celebrations also included Mathmos exhibiting its Astro Heritage line at Design Junction. Enjoy the images below which celebrate 2013 and 50 years of the iconic lava lamp.
